In a rueda, many couples dance together and their moves are coordinated by a caller who calls out the names of figures that everyone in the rueda knows. People would say to each other “Let’s dance like we do in the casino!” and the name “casino” stuck.Ĭasino was born in a format known as the rueda (literally, “circle” or “wheel” in Spanish). These places were not places where people went to gamble, as an English-speaking person might expect, but rather they were centers of music and dance culture.
